Winter Series 2019
The 2019 Winter season has now ended. Weather across the eight weeks was mixed and the first week saw light winds, strong tides and heavy rain, which made it challenging for the sailors and the race officer. Some weeks saw perfect weather with good winds and clear skies. Some weeks saw the safety boat working hard as the gusts came through and tipped a few boats over but there was some very exciting racing. Eight out of the nine planned races were held and there were five different winners in five different classes.
The last race of the series was due to be held on Boxing Day but, due to the wind in the harbour and the forecast it was agreed that it had to be abandoned. However, the fleet convened to the club bar and enjoyed some festive cheer and a good lunch. The result from this race could easily have changed the final standings with double points due to be awarded. In the end there was only two points difference between 1st and 2nd place. Congratulations to Kim Furniss for taking first place and the Brass Monkey trophy. Second place went to Hans Wehmeyer and Third to Dave Gamble. Other prizes were awarded to Sal Furniss for the first lady, Elliot Toms for best junior and Kay Barr for the best endeavour. Well done to all who braved the elements and took part. A total of 18 people signed up for the series. Many thanks to those who manned the safety boat and thanks to Fowey Gallants SC for allowing people to use the boats. Thanks also to Andrew and Colin for organising the series.
All involved have agreed that this has been an enjoyable and successful winter series. Hopefully it is the start of sailing in Fowey during the “closed” season and it is intended to run a longer series this coming winter from October – December.
