Fowey River Championships 25-27 May – Day 2

 In Sailing

By Andrew Dellow

Day two format was a repeat of day one other than the breeze was much stronger bringing to good use the previous nights championship dinner at Royal Fowey Yacht Club! Race one saw Kittiwake, Zethar, Iota, Kingfisher and Gabbiano leading out of the river. Two races developed- one between Kittiwake and Zethar and the other with the next three. At the finish the order stayed the same but set a pattern to be repeated over the day. Race two was delayed to allow a capsized boat to be recovered and the crew taken ashore (all safe and sound if a little damp). With the breeze a little stronger crews were working hard to get upwind. Some familiar faces were at the windward mark with Kittiwake rounding ahead of Zethar. A battle between Goldeneye, Kingfisher and Iota followed behind with these three boats shadowing each other to the end of the race. At the end Kittiwake took first from Zethar with Goldeneye third, Iota fourth and Kingfisher fifth. Final race of the day back to the yacht club line saw Kittiwake finish ahead of Zethar for the third time that day. Goldeneye, Kingfisher, Iota and Saffron came down the final run approaching the finish line-abreast at times and with only two boat lengths separating those four that was the finishing order. So day two finished with Kittiwake first and Zethar second in all three races. For the minor placing Kingfisher, Goldeneye and Iota took turns in third, fourth and fifth.
